Frequently asked questions

Where does OpenParks get its information?

How current are the park alerts and closures?
The alerts shown here come from an NPS data snapshot taken Oct 27, 2026. Park conditions can change within hours, so check the park's page on nps.gov or call the park before you go.
How many National Park Service sites are listed?
OpenParks lists 475 sites from the NPS data, including 63 with a National Park designation. They range from national monuments and historic sites to seashores, trails and recreation areas.
Which parks are free to enter?
In the NPS fee data, 365 of 475 sites are marked as having no entrance fee, and 124 sites accept the interagency America the Beautiful pass. Each park page on OpenParks shows that park's fees and passes.
Can I reserve a campsite on OpenParks?
No. OpenParks only shows campground details from the NPS data. Where the NPS lists a reservation link, such as Recreation.gov, the campground list links to it so you can book there.

How OpenParks works

Each park page combines several NPS datasets — park details, alerts, entrance fees and passes, visitor centers and campgrounds — into one page. Descriptions are short excerpts credited to the NPS, and photos are NPS images shown from nps.gov with their credits. For trip planning, always confirm details on the park's official nps.gov page.
